About Papamoa East

Pāpāmoa East is the newer, eastern portion of Pāpāmoa - the part of the township that has grown out of farmland into master-planned neighbourhoods over the past two decades. Where western Pāpāmoa is the older, established beachside community, the east is defined by its modern subdivisions, wide residential streets, new schools and large reserves. It is one of the fastest-growing urban areas in New Zealand.

Broadly, Pāpāmoa East covers the planned subdivisions inland and east of the older beachside township - including the Golden Sands and Wairākei areas - and extends toward the Kaituna River. Key local roads include Tara Road and Te Okuroa Drive, which carry much of the area's traffic, and Domain Road further west. The newer neighbourhoods sit a short drive or cycle from the eastern stretch of Pāpāmoa Beach.

The defining recent change is the Pāpāmoa East Interchange, which opened to traffic ahead of Easter 2026. The four-lane bridge and ramps connect Pāpāmoa East directly to the Tauranga Eastern Link motorway (State Highway 2), built by Tauranga City Council in partnership with the NZ Transport Agency. An eastbound off-ramp had opened earlier, in August 2025. The interchange relieves long-standing pressure on Tara Road and Te Okuroa Drive and is widely described as the key piece of infrastructure unlocking further growth across the eastern corridor.

Schools & Families

Pāpāmoa East has a distinctly young, family-oriented character. The subdivisions have been built with new schools, playgrounds and reserves designed in - making it one of the most family-focused parts of the wider Tauranga area. Several state primary schools serve the eastern neighbourhoods, and roll growth has been rapid as the population has climbed.

Golden Sands School

A state primary (Years 1-6) in the heart of the Golden Sands area, established in 2011. It has grown strongly with the surrounding subdivision and operates at a large capacity as the population in the east has increased.

Tahatai Coast School

An established state primary (Years 1-6) serving the Pāpāmoa coastal area, one of the larger primary schools in the district. A long-standing option for families across the eastern neighbourhoods.

Te Akau ki Pāpāmoa School

A state primary (Years 1-6) serving the Pāpāmoa community, established around 2000. One of the schools absorbing demand from the area's residential growth.

Newer & planned schools

A newer primary school opened on Te Okuroa Drive in 2021 to help ease roll growth, and further schools have been signalled for the long-term eastern growth corridor as it develops.

School zones can change. Enrolment zones in Pāpāmoa East are adjusted as new schools open and rolls grow. If a particular school is important to your decision, confirm the current zone directly with the school or the Ministry of Education rather than relying on a general guide. See our Pāpāmoa schools page for the full local list.

Parks & Reserves

Open space is one of Pāpāmoa East's strengths. The master-planned layout includes community reserves, neighbourhood playgrounds and a network of walkways and cycleways threaded between the subdivisions. Larger reserves provide sports fields and event space for the growing population.

Shops & Services

For most of its early growth, Pāpāmoa East relied on shops at the western end of Pāpāmoa and at the Mount. That is changing: a sub-regional town centre is being developed in stages in the east, anchored by a supermarket and adding retail, hospitality and home-improvement tenants, with community and health facilities planned.
