UV levels in Pāpāmoa are extreme during summer (Oct–Mar), regularly hitting 11–12 at midday. SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat and shirt are essential when the UV index is above 3. Reapply every two hours outdoors. The UV index is shown on this page when current data is available.
Pāpāmoa Beach is patrolled by Pāpāmoa Surf Life Saving Club during summer (Labour Weekend to Easter). Always swim between the flags. Rips can form quickly after periods of swell or after rain. Check the Surf & Tides page before entering the water.
Pāpāmoa averages around 1,300mm of rain annually - similar to Auckland but typically delivered in shorter, heavier bursts. Afternoon sea breezes are common in summer, cooling beach temperatures by 2–3°C. Northwest winds ahead of frontal systems can bring warm, humid conditions before rain arrives from the west.
December through March brings the best beach conditions: warm temperatures (22–26°C), calm seas and long days. January and February are the driest months. March and April offer warm weather with far fewer crowds. The AIMS Games each September (5–11 Sep 2026) is the busiest event period - accommodation books out months ahead.
