Common Questions About Pāpāmoa Community

Answers to the questions locals and newcomers ask most about living in Pāpāmoa.

Pāpāmoa is generally a safe, family-friendly community. The most common crime is property crime - particularly vehicle break-ins at beach carparks and opportunistic theft in newer subdivisions. Violent crime is low. Pāpāmoa has a staffed police station at 530 Papamoa Beach Road and a dedicated community constable. Neighbourhood Support has over 5,000 members, one of the highest participation rates in New Zealand for a suburb of its size.
Contact Pāpāmoa Neighbourhood Support coordinator Bruce Banks on 027 271 3772. You can join your local street group, receive the e-newsletter with crime alerts, and get a window sticker. Coverage is strong in established streets but gaps remain in newer Pāpāmoa East subdivisions where coordinators are still being recruited.
Pāpāmoa has eight schools: Golden Sands School, Pāpāmoa Primary School, Pāpāmoa Beach School, Te Akau ki Pāpāmoa School (Māori immersion), Pahoia School, Holy Cross Catholic School, and Pāpāmoa College (secondary). Each school has its own enrolment zone. See the Schools in Pāpāmoa page for zones, contacts and enrolment details.
The Pāpāmoa Library - known as Te Ao Mārama - is at 15 Gravatt Road. It offers book lending, free Wi-Fi, story time sessions, computer access, and a regular Justice of the Peace drop-in service. It is part of the Tauranga City Libraries network.
Pāpāmoa has a wide range of sports clubs including Pāpāmoa Football Club, Pāpāmoa Surf Life Saving Club, Pāpāmoa Cricket Club, and several netball and rugby clubs. The Gordon Spratt Reserve provides the main sports fields. Many clubs welcome new members - see the Sports Clubs page for contacts and registration details.
Pāpāmoa is represented by Tauranga City Council (TCC) ward councillors and the elected Mayor. The local Member of Parliament is Tom Rutherford. For council services, rates queries, or resource consents, contact Tauranga City Council or see the Local Government page.
The Zespri AIMS Games is the world's largest intermediate school multi-sport tournament, held annually in Tauranga during the second week of September (5–11 September 2026). It brings approximately 12,000 student athletes from across New Zealand to the Bay of Plenty. Pāpāmoa accommodation books out completely during this period - advance booking is essential.
Yes. Pāpāmoa's beachfront location means parts of the suburb sit within tsunami evacuation zones. Residents should know their zone - blue zone properties near the beach face the highest risk. The Gordon Spratt Reserve tsunami mound has a capacity of 3,800 people. In a tsunami warning, move immediately to high ground - do not wait for an official order if you feel a long or strong earthquake. See the Emergency Preparedness page for full guidance.
