Surf Spots - Pāpāmoa Beach

Pāpāmoa Beach is a long, open sand beach break facing north-east along the Bay of Plenty coast. It works best on a NE to E swell with light offshore (southerly) winds, producing clean faces suitable for all levels. Wave heights are typically 0.5–1.5m, occasionally larger during solid NE swells. The beach is well-suited to beginners and intermediates, and its length means uncrowded peaks are easy to find.

Eastern Stretch - toward Kaituna
Beach breakIntermediateBetter on bigger swells
Eastern end of Pāpāmoa Beach Road
The eastern end toward the Kaituna River mouth is quieter and often produces longer, cleaner walls on a good NE swell. The sandbar structure shifts seasonally but can be the pick of the beach on the right day. Less suitable for beginners - no patrol coverage. Check conditions before paddling out.
Western End - near Pāpāmoa Hills
Beach breakIntermediate
Western end of Pāpāmoa Beach Road
The western end near the Pāpāmoa Hills track access can produce good peaks, particularly in southerly swells that wrap around. A good option when the central beach is onshore. Generally quieter than the Domain area.
Best Conditions for Pāpāmoa
Ideal swell direction
NE to E swell is the sweet spot. Straight N swells can work but are less consistent. SE swells rarely produce good surf at Pāpāmoa due to beach orientation.
Wind direction
Light S to SW winds are offshore and produce clean faces. NE winds (onshore) chop things up quickly. Early mornings are typically glassier before sea breezes build.
Best tides
The 2–3 hours either side of high tide generally produces the best shape. Dead low can get shallow and dumpy across sandbars, especially on the eastern section.
Water temperature
Summer (Dec–Mar): 19–22°C - no wetsuit needed. Winter (Jun–Aug): 15–17°C - 2–3mm spring suit. Autumn and spring: 17–20°C.

Beach & Surf Safety
Rip currents: Rip currents can form in gutters at Pāpāmoa Beach. If caught in a rip, do not swim against it - float, stay calm, signal for help, and swim parallel to shore to exit the rip channel.
Swim & surf between the flags
Surf Life Saving NZ patrols the Domain area October to April, on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Always surf and swim between the red and yellow flags when patrols are operating.
Rip awareness
Rips form in deeper channels between sandbars - look for discoloured water, choppy surface and foam moving seaward. If caught: float, signal, swim parallel to shore to exit.
Surf with others
Avoid surfing alone at the unpatrolled eastern and western ends. Always tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back.
Emergency contacts
Emergency: 111. Pāpāmoa Surf Lifesaving Club is based at the Domain. For non-emergency welfare concerns, contact Surf Life Saving NZ.
