Pāpāmoa has a rich Māori heritage deeply connected to the land and coastline. The area is within the rohe (territory) of Ngā Pōtiki and Ngāi Te Rangi iwi. The name Pāpāmoa comes from te reo Māori and the area contains significant archaeological and cultural sites, most visibly at Pāpāmoa Hills where seven historical Māori pā (fortified settlement) sites are visible along the walking tracks.
Pāpāmoa Hills contains seven historical Māori pā sites visible along the walking tracks, recognisable by the terracing on the hillsides. At the summit, visitors stand on one of the largest pā sites. The park is managed by Bay of Plenty Regional Council and entry is free. Currently partially open after January 2026 weather damage - check track status before visiting.
